Why Do Dental Implants Fail?
Since dental implant failure is so uncommon, you may be wondering what can lead to it in the first place. Here are some of the most common causes:
- Infection: If an infection known as peri-implantitis occurs around the dental implant posts, it could significantly damage the tissues supporting them.
- Failed Osseointegration: Osseointegration is a natural process where the jawbone fuses with the implant posts. If osseointegration doesn’t take place, the dental implants will fail.
- Physical Trauma: Dental implants are durable, but they’re not indestructible; they might be damaged if you get hit in the mouth.
Symptoms of Failed Dental Implants
Dental implants should remain completely still once they have joined with your jawbone; thus, if they come loose, then that’s a strong indicator that something has gone wrong. Additionally, a failed implant post is often accompanied by unusual pain, and you may notice that it’s harder to chew your food. If an infection is to blame, you may experience bleeding and swelling.
Note that dental implants can fail only a short time after they’re placed, but it’s also possible for them to fail years later. In either situation, you will notice the same kinds of symptoms.
How Dental Implant Salvage Works
Once you get to our office, we can examine your mouth to gather information about your situation. After identifying the root of the failure, we can put together a treatment plan. It could involve a deep cleaning to treat an infection, or it may involve removing the implant posts so that the mouth can heal. (It may be possible for you to receive new dental implants once we’ve finished addressing the underlying problem.)
